11. How Do You Do by Mayer Hawthorne
This man is charming. He’s like the Michael Bublé of R&B, except half his repertoire isn’t covers of whoever the R&B equivalent of Frank Sinatra is. He’s practically from Canada (Michigan, technically), though, and he probably puts on a heck of a show, both of which are Bublésque traits.
(Also, did you know he played an “alternate” Thanksgiving halftime show from his parents’ basement when the 55,000-person petition to have him replace Nickelback was unsuccessful? What a class act.)
Anyway, How Do You Do is jaunty fun—a door to the world of Motown and soul for today’s generation. If I knew the first thing about dancing, I’d love to go to a Mayer Hawthorne show in a vast ballroom and twirl a pretty girl around to these groovy tunes. And yes, I’d call them “groovy tunes,” and yes, said pretty girl better have a really high dorkiness threshold. But we digress.
